Guyton Symposium; talks by Texas, Tokyo, Johns Hopkins faculty headline upcoming events

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

Friday, Sept. 6

Texas M.D. to discuss Chagas Disease screening, pregnancy

Dr. Morven Edwards, infectious disease faculty at the Texas Children's Clinical Care Center, Houston, will give the UMMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds presentation, “Screening for Chagas Disease in Pregnant Women,” at 7 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Guyton Symposium to include presentations, book signing

​Three presentations and a book signing are among the activities slated as part of the Billy S. Guyton History of Medicine Symposium scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6.

After a UMMC welcome and update from 10:45-11 a.m., Dr. Amy Wiese Forbes will present "The Murder of Col. Crane and the Determination of Insanity" from 11-11:30 a.m. in room SOM 111; Dr. Ralph Didlake will present "Centenary College of Brandon Springs - Mississippi's First School of Medicine," from 11:30 a.m.- noon in room SOM 111; Dr. Lucius M. Lampton will present the 17th annual Guyton Lecture, "Images of Mississippi Medicine: A Photographic History of Medicine in Mississippi," from noon-1 p.m. in room SOM 124; and a book signing by Lampton will take place from 1-2 p.m. in room U115-03 in the Rowland Medical Library Collaborative Center.

Psychiatry faculty to address alcohol use in pregnancy, FAS

Dr. Saurabh B. Bhardwaj, UMMC assistant professor of psychiatry, will give the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Grand Rounds presentation, “Alcohol Use in Pregnancy and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS),” at noon onFriday, Sept. 6, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Monday, Sept. 9

Tokyo professor to address aldosterone, salt-sensitive HTN

Dr. Toshiro Fujita, professor, fellow and chief of the Division of Clinical Epigenetics, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Seminar Series presentation, "Aldosterone and Salt-sensitive Hypertension," at noon on Monday, Sept. 9, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Johns Hopkins prof to talk adult cortical plasticity recovery

Dr. Hey-Kyoung Lee, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, will give the UMMC Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "Cross-Modal Recovery of Cortical Plasticity in Adults," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in classroom 3A (North Wing N318).

CIH director to connect, share, advance 'sleep hygiene'

Dr. Danny Burgess, associate professor, director of the Center for Integrative Health and co-director of the Student Counseling and Wellness Center, will give the UMMC Group on Women in Health and Science's "Connect, Share, Advance" session, "Improving Sleep Hygiene: A Talk that will Surely Put You to Sleep," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

ACP wellness champ to explore work, life integration 

Dr. Richard M. UKMC faculty to explain dietary impact on maternal, infant health

Dr. Holly Hull, associate professor of dietetics and nutrition in the School of Health Professions at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, will give the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics, the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence Grand Rounds presentation, "Intervening to Change the Maternal Diet to Impact Maternal and Infant Health," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Saturday, Sept. 21

JHS to host football-themed 2019 Exam Center Kick Off

​The Jackson Heart Study will provide information about Exam 4 and will offer free health screenings during the 2019 Exam Center Kick Off on Saturday, Sept. 21, at center stage in the Jackson Medical Mall.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. with health screenings to take place from 8-9:45 a.m. and the exam center update to follow from 10 a.m.-noon.

William Carey faculty to explore first-year anatomy improvement

Dr. Kenneth C. Children's CEO, CNEO to host chat over coffee

Dr. Guy Giesecke, Children's of Mississippi chief executive officer, and Ellen Hansen, Children's of Mississippi chief nursing executive officer, will host a “Coffee Talk” presentation from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Perioperative Conference Room.

UT-Southwestern professor to introduce NIH Research Policy

Dr. Elizabeth Heitman, professor of ethics in science and medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, will give a webinar, "Introduction to NIH Research Policy: Regulations and Standards for Responsible Research," from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.

Vice chancellor to speak at fall faculty meeting​

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for health affairs, is scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting set for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Woodward will provide an update for the Medical Center and faculty with 20 years of service will be recognized. Flu shots will be available before and after the meeting from Student and Employee Health. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Selected graduate students from diverse backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines will participate in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive competition to provide the best solution for a realistic scenario about complex rural health issues from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in lecture hall 124 in the medical education building.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the event will include participants from Jackson State University, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi and UMMC. A reception will follow the competition.
